Update/Need Advice?

Hey guys , before we start uni I was hoping I could ask for some advice since I`ve had problems with self confidence in the past in college and it kind of dragged my work down where I mentally put myself down and struggled to draw. I was wondering if anyone had any advice when it came to confidence and how to not compare yourself to others/ put yourself down?

  1. In my experience at least I find drawing once a day helps even if it's crap, just because it usually helps get ideas flowing even if you hate it...try drawing in ways you don't usually. I compare myself to others all of the time but I think the best way to think of it is remember you're not them...you're individual. They might very well be looking at your work thinking the same as you, remember that your difference is what makes you unique. Also try use other people's work to motivate yourself to try harder and do better, or ask them for advice or about how they work/what inspires them. On the other hand, if you're overworking yourself then take a day off and do something that's unrelated to drawing for a while to give your mind a rest...not sure if any of that will help but just some suggestions/ideas. Hope it does help tho ^_^ feel free to message me whenever.

  2. Hi Sarah. I want to agree with Deanna; when it comes to comparing to other peoples' art, the smarter idea is to use it as inspiration or motivation. We've all been there where the work of experts looks like some distant, perhaps unreachable target. The truth is practically all of them have been in that same situation at some point.

It's compelling and natural to compare your skills to what others are doing. One idea I suggest is focusing on and working out how to close the gap. Think "what could I try" rather than "wish I could". And don't be afraid to experiment.
